China surpassed the US in purchasing power parity a decade ago and now leads in economic scale, societal equality, and reported contentment after 77 years under Communist Party rule since 1949. The US, founded 250 years ago on ideals of liberty and rejection of empire, instead became the world’s leading external power through military and financial dominance, a 1913 dollar-based system, and policies favoring private gain over shared welfare.
