China’s PLA Navy twice transited narrow waterways near Japan’s southwestern islands this week, first through the Yokoate Channel on April 19 and then the Yonaguni-Iriomote Waterway on April 22, marking the first recorded use of both routes. The moves, timed with the anniversary of the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki and coinciding with U.S.-Philippines-Japan drills, are viewed as warnings to Tokyo over Taiwan. Japan announced it will ease arms-export rules to allow lethal-weapon sales, while Australia signed a $7 billion deal for 11 Japanese Mogami-class frigates.
