Tokyo's Fear, Neo-Militarism and the Security Dilemma

Japan is increasing its defense spending in response to China’s military rise, North Korea’s missile program and risks in the Taiwan Strait; the military budget rose 9.7 percent in 2025 to reach 62.2 billion dollars, with a target of 2 percent of GDP by 2027. While Article 9 of the Constitution is being stretched through reinterpretations, steps such as Type-12 missiles and Tomahawk integration are perceived by neighbors as a threat, deepening the security dilemma.
